On August 12, 2022, we will present the latest edition of our summer program, Summer of Music: IV, with the stellar participation of Argenis Brito who will delight us with specialized versions of legendary chilean singer-songwriter and socialist political activist Victor Jara, both as live and as a sound installation. Latin, hot-blooded and with decidedly tropical tendencies, Argenis promises an experience full of emotions, Latin American nostalgia mixed with a powerful contemporary sound that will envelop the attendees in a magnetic embodied listening experience. Think Mambotur, Señor Coconut, Los Refrescos and many other rum-fueled collaborations held within the confines of slick studios. These are our main character's playgrounds.

MONOM Presents: HUBRIS film premiere in 4DSOUND

HUBRIS

Premiere in 4DSOUND at MONOM Berlin
Film screening, performance, and original spatial sound composition
Opening Days September 18,19 & 20

MONOM is pleased to present HUBRIS premiere in 4DSOUND on 18, 19 & 20 of September. Hubris is a feature film written, directed and produced by Marie Polo.  At the crossing between art, performance, music and cinema HUBRIS will be screened in MONOM Studio spatialized by Shehryar Ahmad accompanying the acousmatic music performance by Marie Polo & Paul Behnam featuring actors of the movie. Visitors will embark on a deep inner sensorial journey and a collective catharsis through visual, sound, smell, touch & taste. It is a cinematic introspection with a strong ritualistic dimension.

Shot during 4 years between Berlin and the Fontainebleau Forest near Paris, the film is about the healing process of a young woman - Alice - who experienced a traumatic experience she does not have any visual memory of. The film is structured as a sophrology session during which the audience enters different layers of body memory of Alice, going back and forth between the present and the nightmarish visions of her past trauma.

The sound design and original score of the film is written and performed by Paul Behnam. Throughout the 22 tracks of the album, he navigates effortlessly between ambient, modern classical, rock, funk, house and techno, unveiling his versatility and his talent for translating emotions into music. Even without the images, the story of Alice unfolds inside your ears throughout an hour of eerie, exhilarating and relaxing pieces of music.

The soundtrack also features a collaboration with electronic music mad dog San Proper (Perlon, Rush Hour), playing his own role in the film and singing on « Dr. Proper ». Italian pianist and lyricist Andrea Monticciolo delivers a moving performance on « Oma Ooh Salem », while Louis McGuire and pandeiro player Adriano Tikogo invites us to a gloomy dance on Pandeiro Show.

After HUBRIS, MONOM is pleased to present  ''The Rainbow Machine", an immersive installation with both sound & moving images. It was born from the electro-acousmatic piece composed by Paul Behnam, with a similar name, translated in French : “La Machine Arc-en-ciel”. It is the result of a collaboration between Paul Behnam and the painter Alexandre Tanqueray who then created a series of graphic works based on the sound composition. This series was later on adapted and fused within another audio-visual form, closer to an animation film thanks to the work of Jan Luis Gottwald.

The Rainbow Machine is a journey towards the colourful skies, onboard an imaginary flying vehicle. The rainbow colours symbolise emotions and traits of humankind. The different archetypes one can face within a life. The Machine embodies the desire for power, society and the madness it can generate.

  • Current hygiene regulations are in effect for the duration of the screening.

  • Filming, recording and photography are not allowed in MONOM Studio

For more information about HUBRIS follow them on social media @hubris_official. For more information about MONOM visit www.monomsound.com For further information regarding the event or interview requests please contact communication@monomsound.com

About Paul Behnam:

Self-taught guitarist, Paul draws his inspiration from Psychedelic Rock, Jazz and the ‘Musique Concrète’ of the 20th century. After many years performing in rock bands, he moved to Berlin where he explored the many ways of playing instruments together with analog machines live, attracted by the endless possibilities offered by electronic music. This is where he started to work on sound design for films, animated movies and delve into acousmatic music, inspired by artists such as Pierre Schaeffer or Brian Eno. Paul is currently working on his first solo LP which will be released in 2021, a concept-album blending French Chanson together with Electronic Music.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

RESO KIIKNADZE was born and raised in the notorious 1960s of Tbilisi, Georgia. After finishing his classical philology studies at the Tbilisi State University, the phase of television appearances with a big band and several festival shows amongst the Tbilisi Conservatory Quintet quickly followed. Making his first and most important compositional development under Micheil Shugliashvili (1941-1996).

Furthermore he studied at the Tbilisi State Conservatoire, composition and Georgian traditional music, and was a founding member of the improvisation ensemble "Nuova Sonanza", collaborated with Butoh dance company 'Tatoeba - Theatre Dance Grotesque" and been awarded composition prizes such as 'Marie-Louise-Imbusch-Stiftung' in 1993, and 'Neue Akademie Braunschweig' 1997, continued with MA studies at Musikhochschule Lübeck and started 2000 a collaboration with the contemporary dance company ‘TanzOrt Nord’ („Maria Magdalena“, „Cumulus“ and „DisTanz“).

From 2008 on he became an assistant professor at the Ilia State University in Tbilisi, whilst still teaching Electronics at the Musikhochschule Lübeck as well as saxophone and improvisation at the Lübecker Musikschule. Returning most of his activities back to Georgia from 2011 on, and becoming Rector of the Tbilisi State Conservatoire for last 8 years, Kiknadze’s current life continues in various formations of jazz, contemporary music, free improvisation, both as saxophone-player and computer musician; he is co-author in many projects including dance, visual arts, poetry, theater, with at least the same intensity as before. Having him perform with Mess_Montage on the unique 4DSOUND of MONOM should merge any audiophile's dreams with nowadays technical reality.

MESS MONTAGE is an experimental electronic music project by the Berlin based Georgian composer, performer and educator Tornike Margvelashvili. He merges folk chant inspired drone-y soundscapes with atmospheric field recordings and minimalist modular synthesis. After teaching electronic music at several institutions in Tbilisi, he was an official participant of the Red Bull Music Academy 20th anniversary camp in Berlin. In 2019 he decided to make his Berlin move, where he currently studies Sound Arts at UDK.

MONOM presents: SNN #3: Forms of the Living

MONOM, Chris Salter, Alexandre Saunier, and Takashi Ikegami together with MUTEK 2020 - Hybrid  (Montreal) are pleased to present: SNN #3: Forms of the Living, world premiere on September 11th, 2020. This performance will take place live for one night only simultaneously in four distant locations: live in Montréal, Berlin, and Tokyo and online on Mozilla Hubs.

Using light, video, sound, VR, and artificial life algorithms and neural networks, Salter, Saunier, and Ikegami together with a group of international collaborators orchestrate a global experience that while internationally shared, is impossible to grasp in its entirety. Source material produced during the COVID pandemic is employed to physically and algorithmically generate a schizophrenic combination lying somewhere between a wild and disjointed Jean-Luc Godard-like collage of news feeds, epidemiological data and statistical models and a slow, meditative and almost hypnotic feeling of a new science-fiction-like world one marked by the entangling of human experience with viral proliferation and machine tracing and forecasting.

In Montreal, Alex Saunier uses video, special analog lenses, and optical modulators to manipulate images taken from hundreds of hours of news media responding to the pandemic condition, visualizations, and simulations of the pandemic outbreak, and video archives of human, machine, and wildlife activity around the world. In Berlin, Chris Salter in collaboration with MONOM’s sound artist Ro Stambuk uses MONOM’s world-renowned 4DSOUND system to create a massive 57 channel spatial sound environment that plunges a live audience (restricted to 50 people) into experiencing the shifting acoustic conditions of the world since March 2020 – where the stoppage of the world economy resulted in a 50% reduction of human-made sound. In Tokyo, physicist and artificial life expert Takashi Ikegami manipulates the audio stream from Berlin, turning the pounding sounds of world cities into the sound of natural landscapes that have re-emerged since the pandemic and sending the stream back to Montreal. Finally, the online audience can experience yet another version of the performance in online VR in three specially designed Mozilla Hubs rooms that transform the media content created in Montreal, Berlin and Tokyo  – where, contrary to the belief that the Internet is a new free space for social gathering, social distancing will also need to be practiced since only 25 visitors will be allowed in at any one time.

MORE ABOUT FORMS OF LIVING

FOTL explores the challenge of sharing our individual experiences with the experiences of strangers around the world while also having to rethink our ways of sharing a world with non-living others - viruses and machines. This combined sense of wonder and utter confusion and uncertainty that seems to intensify daily in the face of current worldwide events is re-materialized in FOTL. The performance thus transforms media content in real-time, back and forth across time zones and continents in a shared experience that is nonetheless impossible to fully grasp by every audience.
